Mrs. LaWanda W. Barnhill
Welcome back to another school year! Hopefully, it will be full of safe, new, and exciting experiences. I am LaWanda Barnhill. I am here to provide our students with personal support, and academic and career guidance to achieve success in school, as well as to prepare them to lead fulfilling lives as responsible members of society.
I work with students in many different capacities throughout the school year by providing classroom guidance, individual counseling, small group counseling, and school-wide programs.
The guidance curriculum includes structured experiences presented systematically through classroom and group activities conducted by the counselor or representatives with expertise in the areas being addressed. I help students by providing lessons that focus on many different areas including school success, character education, decision-making, suicide prevention, bullying prevention, drugs and alcohol awareness, conflict resolution, post-secondary education and career goals, etc.
Individual counseling is designed to give students the opportunity to discuss problems one on one with a counselor, gain insight, and learn skills to address the concerns.
Group counseling provides students an opportunity to develop solving strategies, learn new skills, and gain support from their peers who are going through similar circumstances. Often, these concerns can get in the way of a student's success in school. Sometimes students feel they are the only ones who are feeling like they do and are reassured when they discover otherwise.
